University of California, Berkeley School of Information Opens Applications for cybersecurity@berkeley
The new online program will respond to a growing demand for security professionals as all industries experience an increased risk of attack
BERKELEY, Calif., Nov. 14, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- The UC Berkeley School of Information (I School) is now accepting applications for its new, online Master of Information and Cybersecurity (MICS) program, also known as cybersecurity@berkeley. The program was developed in partnership with the College of Engineering and in collaboration with the Center for Long-Term Cybersecurity (CLTC) at UC Berkeley.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of information security professionals is projected to grow 28 percent by 2026, much faster than the average for all occupations. Significant industry growth can be attributed to the demand for more innovative solutions to protect privacy and prevent hacking in an increasingly data-driven environment.
"Data breaches are an ever increasing threat to today's public and private entities," said Annalee "Anno" Saxenian, dean and professor in the School of Information at UC Berkeley. "This program will not only equip students with core technical abilities, but they will also develop fluency in the business, political, and legal contexts for cybersecurity that will ultimately address national security considerations, ethical issues, and policy frameworks."
"A crucial part of our mission at CLTC is to enable the next generation of cybersecurity professionals to get out ahead of the evolving threat environment," said Steve Weber, Faculty Director of the Center for Long-Term Cybersecurity. "This is a place where research and teaching truly reinforce each other, and we're honored to be in a position to support both and enhance the synergies between them."
The new program consists of 27 credit hours with courses focusing on both the technical and interdisciplinary aspects of cybersecurity including cryptography, secure programming and web security. MICS students will interact with faculty, network with other students, and gain exposure to applied research through live online classes and real-world immersion experiences. Classes are taught by UC Berkeley faculty through interactive course content powered by 2U, Inc.
